Sand Diego Union Tribune: “Pint-Sized Pour”
PALM Speciale, Steenhuffel, Belgium
Old, Not Bold: On first sip, this flagship ale from a 261 year old brewery tastes mild and - for Americans who think of Belgian beers as spicy, yeasty, challenging – dull, but give it time.
On The Nose: PALM’s amber color comes from toasted malted barley from France’s Champagne region. Belgian ales aren’t known for their hoppiness and British Golding hops are used sparingly here. But PALM’s three yeasts give it a war, fruity aroma that hints at the smooth toffee and apple-butter flavors in the glass.
Family Matters: PALM is the best-selling amber ale in Belgium, but it’s new to the States, where it is being test marketed in New York and San Diego. The company’s portfolio includes the Steenbrugge abbey beers and Rodenbach, the legendary sour ale.
Draft Pick: PALM is only available now on draft; we sampled the brew at Jayne’s Gastropub, 4677 30th St.
